Here are three different ways to monitor your heart rate during exercise. It is very important that you know how hard you are working during exercise. Exercise will make your heart strong, healthy and will burn lots of calories if you stay within your safety zone. Exercise makes the heart grow fonder.
  • Take Your Pulse - Place the tip of your index finger and the tip of your middle finger on the radial artery, right below the thumb, on the inside of your other wrist, pressing lightly. Start with zero on the first beat and count for 30 seconds then multiply by two. Check your pulse several times during your workout and be sure that it is within your safe zone. If your heart rate is too high, slow down.
  • Heart Rate Monitor - A Heart Rate Monitor is worn on your wrist just like a watch, along with a light weight transmitter that is worn around your chest. HEART RATE MONITOR'S are great because they actually tell you when to decrease or increase your exercise intensity.
  • Talk Test - During exercise, you should be able to breath comfortably and talk during all phases of the workout. If you can't, you are working to hard and need to slow down. It is also important to pay attention to signs of overexertion which include pounding in your chest, faintness, dizziness and profuse sweating.
